Collide Collide series Book 1 eBook Shelly Crane

The only reason this book is getting three stars is because the story pushed me to finish. The editing was at first draft, November 30th level. Maybe a spell check had been done but not much else.

I read it because of the preview in Ascended, which did seem to be edited, the preview of this book, to clarify.

As an older reader, I have to admit that there was far too much romance and attempted rape both the result of repressive thinking. 'I'm saving myself for marriage' line was over done, especially when the girl spent much of her time seducing and daydreaming about her alien. If she had been half so much into her philosophy then her alien wouldn't have needed to be the strong one, cooling said girl's jets.

The really sad part of this book is that instead of focusing on the end of the world and how to help, the main characters spent their time looking over daisies and pulling love-me, love-me-not petals. A little romance is nice but dwelling in seducive virgin-land when the roof is on fire, especially with present/past-tense and other severe editing issues made this quite the disappointing read. Then leaving us with a cliffhanger ...

Tightened up, cleaned up this could be a wonderful story.

Collide Collide series Book 1 eBook Shelly Crane Reviews

Collide, by Shelly Crane, is an interesting, enjoyable hybrid of a novel - science fiction, romance, within a gripping escape and fight back context. It's framed by the sci-fi trappings of a race of bad aliens vs good aliens helping humans, and driven by a group of humans fighting for their lives. The meat of the book, however, is about the budding love between an 'outsider' teenager named Sherry Patterson and a 'way outsider' called Merrick.

In a nutshell, the sci-fi portion of the novel concerns Sherry's brother, Danny, who is a Special - the next phase of human evolution. A species called the Keepers watch over the other Specials on Earth, like a real-life group of Guardian Angels. Merrick is Danny's protector, and by default, Sherry as well. An evil race called the Lighters want to kill, or absorb the Specials - along with the help of Markers (hideous beasts who locate the Specials). Merrick's job is to keep Danny and Sherry safe, while joining other Specials and Keepers over the course of the novel.

The budding romance between Sherry and Merrick is what really drives the book. Instead of a 'Hello-I Like You - I love You' whirlwind love affair, this one is a slow-burning, totally realistic one that follows the cross-species couple through highs and lows, drama and serenity, until....

Collide is the first book of a series and makes its mark convincingly. The central characters are three-dimensional and realistic, the pacing veers from dramatic escapes to lulling moments between the agreeable couple, and the story as a whole is light, dark, snarky, and fulfilling.

Ms. Crane, for a reader who tends to stay away from romance and sci-fi, you've written something that not only kept my admittedly short attention span occupied, but left me with the hunger to read the next book. Not bad!! -)
I was really excited for this book. The first time I heard of this series, when I signed up for the tour. Wow, what a great beginning. There were some slow parts in the beginning, but it didn't take me long to get into the plot, the feel of the story, and the characters.

The genre of this story is a bit hard to define. This story has far most, romance, supernatural romance but it has a very strong feel for an apocalyptic book. It's the end of the world as they know it. The book starts off with a quick glance right before it all began. The life that of Sherry and her brother Danny, only a little snippet of what their life was like before it all went down and their relationship. They are pretty close about a year apart and they seem to take care of each other. Danny just graduated and works at a coffee house, doesn't drive, and really has no motivation to escape the parents' house. Sherry is working for a tabloid, just got out of a really horrible, controlling, abusive relationship, and lives alone. . Sherry is hoping her life will start to get better when everything gets worse. The moon disappears, there is talk about these strangers who have dark eyes and mysterious. No one really knows if they are dangerous or not. No one has really had any contact with them but everyone is afraid of them. One day Sherry sees her ex out in front of building who claims to be one of the mysterious peoples and her ex is dead. He now inhabits his body. He tells her the world is about to go nuts and she and her brother must go with him to hide until it's all over. Against her will, she goes, and so does Danny. Their life of hiding and on the run begins, with some action, new understandings, and lot of romance.

I like the story it is refreshing, new and a good mixture of two genres. Once the book gets past the explanations in the beginning and the relationships begin the story moves at a nice pace and is very intriguing, I couldn't seem to put the book down. Little by little the story becomes clear, but there always seems to be a mystery or two surrounding the events. There were many times I felt there is something more going on.

There were many colorful characters that filled the book; many people joined the crew as they were on the run. Some were jerks, some were trouble, some were harsh, and some were leaders, but they all fit into the story quite well. I had a bit of trouble getting into Sherry's character at first. She was very big on the poor me factor and seemed to whine quite a bit, but once she started to understand what they were really up against, and life was much worse than what she had before, she started to take control of the situations. I liked Danny quite a bit. Once he realized life isn't a piece of pie to sit back and enjoy, he went from boy to man, stepping up and playing a good brother type. Then there is Merrick, the mysterious being that has taken over the ex's body. He is just wonderful, kind, chivalrous, protective, a great leader, everything the love interest should be.

I had a lot of fun with this book even if the feel and premise was the end of the world. I will continue with the series and I am very excited to dive back into this world with the next one.
