Ah, the Silver Brumby series. Perhaps the main reason I found it in myself to love Australia having moved there from a foreign country and not liking it much at all. If you love the High Country, or horses, you should give this a go. I think Moon Filly is still one of my favourite books

I like the way all the books in the series are narrated by the same person, so the characters seem even more familiar. This is the fourth book in the series, and to my mind the first four were the very best of her books because they still had Thowra as the central character, but all the books are worthwhile reading.
Pretty much the best thing about these books is the evocative bush atmosphere that Mitchell manages to conjure.
It is becoming silly soap opera here, as the conflict between the younger generation over the female horses leads to travelling and lying.
The old boss horse has to come and sort them out.
I fell in love with these books in the early 70's and still love them. The new covers do not have the charm of the first books though. The author's description of the surroundings puts you in the Australian bush with the horses and the other animals.
You find yourself rooting for the horses, and crying when one is lost.
The real life Brumbies are in real danger from people who slaughter them from the air.
Read the books and then go support the effort to Save the Brumbies
Fourth in the wonderful series about the wild horses of south-east Australia. To really enjoy this one, you should have read at least Silver Brumbies of the South which introduces most of the characters and storylines.
Baringa, grandson of Thowra and Lightning son of Thowra, are trying to build their own herds in the limestone land to the south of the mountains. In this tale not only are there older, unfriendly stallions to contend with but a bushfire places them all in danger. Baringa is younger than Lightning and the older colt resents that Baringa has managed to attract the beautiful white fillies Dawn and Moon. Only at the very end does Lightning realise that his red roan filly Goonda (meaning fire) is more important to him and that there is plenty of room for both young stallions to prosper.
Beautifully written, the tale wraps up the first four books well. The fifth book, Silver Brumby Whirlwind, takes place some considerable time later and is not nearly so good. Read Moon Filly before that one as it introduces some of the characters and then the two series are merged.
Loved the Silver Brumby series. Arrived quickly.
